The recent conviction of Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, is a blatant illustration of political manipulation and bullying targeted at individuals based on their gender identity. As a staunch advocate for human rights, COFAA vehemently condemns this flagrant misuse of power, which only serves to further marginalize transwomen in Nigeria.
The charges brought against Bobrisky for money mutilation are not only disproportionate but also shed light on the systemic issue of discriminatory treatment pervasive within the Nigerian legal system. It is evident that similar infractions occur frequently during political campaigns, ceremonies, and even places of worship, yet they are not met with such harsh consequences.
Furthermore, the decision to incarcerate Bobrisky in a male custodial center raises grave concerns regarding the safety and well-being of transgender individuals within the Nigerian correctional system. The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) must urgently implement measures to safeguard the rights of transgender inmates and ensure their accommodation aligns with their gender identity.
We call upon the Governor of Lagos State to intervene in this matter and grant clemency to Bobrisky, recognizing the unjust nature of her conviction and the imperative for equitable treatment under the law. It is time to halt the persecution of transgender individuals and uphold their inherent human rights.
Regarding Bobrisky’s acknowledgment of being male during court proceedings, it is imperative to acknowledge the intricacies of gender identity and the societal pressures endured by individuals like her. Instead of weaponizing this admission for further discrimination, we must strive for greater comprehension and acceptance of transgender individuals in Nigerian society.
In conclusion, we implore all stakeholders to unite in championing inclusivity and equality for all, irrespective of gender identity or expression. The pursuit of justice and human rights transcends boundaries, and together, we can forge a more equitable and just society for all.
