On Thursday, May 23, 2024, the Council for Affirmative Action (COFAA) actively participated in the just-concluded National Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Conference held at IBETO Hotel, Abuja, organized by Lawyers Alert Nigeria. This significant event brought together over 60 SRHR organizations from across Nigeria to discuss crucial issues under the theme “Culture and Social Norms within Communities.”

The conference featured a series of panel conversations, including “Our Laws and Key Populations: Where Are the Positives?” and “Discrimination and Vulnerable Groups within Communities.” These discussions provided a platform for critical dialogue on the legal and social challenges faced by key populations, including queer persons.

COFAA took an active role in ventilating issues concerning the rights and well-being of Queer individuals. Our representatives highlighted the discrimination and vulnerabilities faced by Queer persons within various communities, advocating for more inclusive laws and policies that protect their rights and dignity.

Other vital topics covered during the conference included safe medical abortion, sexual rights, female genital mutilation (FGM), and broader SRHR issues. The event featured speakers and delegates such as lawyers, judges, civil society organizations (CSOs), media representatives, the National Human Rights Commission, and relevant government agencies.

In-person participation was by invitation only, ensuring a focused and engaged audience, while online participation was open to all upon registration. The conference began promptly at 10 am and provided a robust platform for knowledge exchange and advocacy.

COFAA is proud to have contributed to this important dialogue and looks forward to continuing our work in advancing the rights and health of all individuals, particularly those within marginalized and vulnerable groups. We extend our gratitude to Lawyers Alert Nigeria for organizing this impactful event and to all participants for their insightful contributions.
