The Council For Affirmative Action (COFAA) is gravely concerned about the alarming socio-economic challenges facing Kebbi State, Northwestern Nigeria, and their devastating impact on the education and well-being of the girl child. The region has been hit hard by economic decline, leading to increased poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to essential services. This dire situation has profound implications for the future of girls in Kebbi State, who are among the most vulnerable populations.

Recent data indicates that Kebbi State is experiencing an unprecedented rise in poverty levels, with over 70% of the population living below the poverty line. The economic hardship has led to a significant drop in school enrollment for girls, with current statistics showing that only 45% of school-age girls are enrolled in primary education, down from 60% in 2020. Secondary school enrollment is even more concerning, with a dismal 25% of girls attending, reflecting the deepening educational crisis.

The economic decline has also exacerbated other socio-economic challenges, including early marriage, child labor, and exploitation. Reports from local NGOs reveal that the rate of early marriages has surged by 30% in the last two years, as families struggling to survive often resort to marrying off their daughters to alleviate financial burdens. Furthermore, child labor has become increasingly prevalent, with many girls forced to work in hazardous conditions, depriving them of their right to education and a safe childhood.

COFAA calls on the government of Kebbi State, federal authorities, and international partners to urgently address this crisis. Immediate interventions are needed to provide financial assistance to families, improve access to education, and protect the rights and well-being of the girl child. The future of an entire generation is at stake, and swift, coordinated action is essential to reverse the current trends.

We also urge community leaders, civil society organizations, and all stakeholders to collaborate in raising awareness about the critical importance of girls’ education and to advocate for policies that prioritize their safety, health, and empowerment. It is only through collective effort that we can ensure a brighter, more equitable future for all children in Kebbi State.

COFAA remains committed to championing the rights of marginalized populations and will continue to work tirelessly to support initiatives that promote gender equality, education, and socio-economic development in Northwestern Nigeria.
